Turkey Tailgate/Iron Bowl!!!

Usually, the Iron Bowl is played the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  This is not usually a problem because it still gives everyone time to enjoy Thanksgiving and then after shopping on Friday, everyone heads back to Tuscaloosa and enjoys the game on Saturday.

This year (and next), they have moved the game to the Friday after Thanksgiving.  Although it didn’t affect us too much this year, it will be tough having to rush back to T-town next year!  Anyway, this year, Alex’s family decided to throw what they were calling a “Turkey Tailgate” so that we could eat leftovers and enjoy the game!

His mom and I had been in cahoots the past couple of weeks trying to plan the party together since I obviously had more access to Alabama stuff.  Anyway, here are some pictures from the event.

 

After lunch, we went over to their neighbor’s house for dessert and to watch the game.

I was way too full and nervous to eat so we all settled in to watch the game. 

The game was intense!  Auburn played the best game they’ve ever played and we weren’t ready, but in the end we were able to pull out a victory.  Like my dad says, a good team knows how to pull out a win when they need one!

It was a fun (and stressful) day, but I’m glad I got to spend it with some awesome people!! Now that the regular season is finished, we’re heading to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game against Florida!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Normally for Thanksgiving, we go to my dad’s parents next door one evening before Thanksgiving, and then spend Thanksgiving day with my mom’s parents.  This year, my dad’s mother isn’t doing too well so we decided not to get together at her house for Thanksgiving, however, we still went to my mom’s parents’ house for Thanksgiving Day.

We had a great time and since I had a good camera this year, I actually took some pictures :)

The food table!  We have the same spread every year, but it is so yummy, we don’t want to change! :) (You can see my strawberry pretzel squares in the bottom left corner – you can see the recipe here.)

I also made Oreo Truffles and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

Since all the kids are getting older, we try to get “kid’s pictures” every year now.  My brother and I are pretty trained at taking pictures, but my cousin (especially the boys), not so much!  After about 50 pictures, we finally got this one that we were happy with! :)

As you can tell, I seem to be the odd man in this crew.  Although I’m the oldest, I’m the smallest, I am the only one with dark brown hair (even my brother looks more like my cousins!), and I’m the only one without a J name!  Don’t ask why Jordan and I didn’t switch places so we could be matched up with the siblings.  We switched near the end, but the pictures we so bad we stuck with this one! :)

My mom and her younger sister (by 8 years!), Tiffany  (You can see where the lighter hair comes from! :))  They are completely night and day as you can even tell by their looks!

After the photo session, we all went in and relaxed (and some napped).  My aunt Tiffany went home and got their two dogs and brought them back before we ate dinner.  My cousin Jordan has an adorable teacup yorkie, which is my FAVORITE kind of dog. 

How cute is he!!  He was looking at the camera and my grandmother brought his brother Max, a ham bone, and he was more interested in what he was doing than taking pictures :)

Anyway, we had a FABULOUS Thanksgiving!!  Lots of good food and family…hard to beat!

Happy Thanksgiving (A little early!)

Sorry I’ve been a little MIA lately!  I’ve got a lot to catch up on, but right now I’m trying to focus on getting my three projects (a huge research proposal, and the development of a an online course and a networking tutorial!)  finished before the end of the semester.  I’m stretched a little thin these days, but everything has to be turned in December 5th so I’ll be free after that :)

Anyway, I’m leaving tomorrow to go home for Thanksgiving and I have very limited internet access.  However, I couldn’t leave before sending my fabulous readers (that’s you :)) warm wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving!! 

I’m very thankful for such wonderful blogger buddies :)

Merry Christmas from Alabama Football!

This year, the recruiting department decided to send out a Christmas card to all of the prospects and coaches who came to visit us throughout the year.  They wanted to use a picture of the recruiting hostesses since we were their primary contact during their visit, however, until recently, we didn’t have a group picture!

tAfter we had our final home game in the bag, we finally got together at the stadium to take one!  It was so cold and blustery, but I think we got a lot of great pictures (which is good because this picture is going in the 2009 Spring Media Guide as well!!).

Unfortunately, they haven’t finished the cards yet, nor have I seen the group pictures, but as soon as we get them back…I’ll be sure to share!

I was able to grab a quick picture with my fabulous friend Rebecca outside the recruiting room at the stadium :)

Alabama vs. Tennessee Chatanooga

This game was very bittersweet.  I was so excited that we had done such a great job this season and since this was sure to be an easier game, we were that much closer to the Iron Bowl and SEC Championship Game against Florida!  However, this is my last season to work football.  My first set of recruits (back in 2005!) are graduating so I feel like it is my time to go to! :)  Since, this was our last home game for the season, it is my last game to work.

Normally, I work registration, but because it was an early game (we had to be there at 7!), we did all of our events at the stadium and we were short on girls (they all skipped out on us!), which meant I had to host recruits :)

I had some fabulous ones too! They were so sweet and they were Bama fans which made it even easier! :)

   We ended up winning the game, BIG…like complete shut-out 45-0.  We even got to put in our second and third string!  I’ll admit, it was a little boring, but Alabama fans needed a boring game for once :)

I’m so proud of our team!!  Next up, the Auburn Tigers! :)

Roll Tide!!

As soon as I posted my last “Catch up” post about receiving my first blog award, I went to read Ms. Brittany Ann’s Blog Living in the Moment, and realized I had won my second….The Fabulous Sugar Doll award :)  I’m so excited!  Not only is it my second award, but it has a fabulous name! :)  Thanks Brittany Ann!

Anyway, the rules of this one are that I have to tell you 10 things you may not know about me and then pass this on to 10 of my favorites.  This will be tough because I had a hard time coming up with 7 interesting facts, but I’m going to try :)

1. My high school mascot was a tiger, but our colors were red and white.  When I lived at home I collected things that were red and white and of course tigers.  Now that I’m at Alabama, I got to keep the red and white things, but had to trade the tigers in for elephants (if you’re not familiar with the SEC, 2 of our huge rivals are tigers so tigers are a no no :))
2. I have a problem saying no to opportunities, which is exactly why my resume is almost 3 pages long.
3. I LOVE gadgets and am a self-proclaimed gadget queen (works out perfectly since I’m a tech major right ;)) I could walk around Best Buy for hours and would be perfectly happy!
4. I’m not sure if it is the teacher in me or the “professional student”, but I ADORE tote bags.  I’m scared to count how many I have and when I go on trips, I tend to buy one that reminds me of that particular place i.e. A vintage Disney movie one from Disneyland, a one covered in, at the time, current Broadway musicals from NY, Chicago skyline from Chicago, etc.
5. I have been getting acrylic nails almost every month since I was in 11th grade (so about 7 years).  I’m that girl that has her manicurist on speed dial (what can I say, she’s amazing and the only one I’ll let touch my nails!)
6. I love seeing movies, but I rarely buy them because I hardly ever watch a movie more than once (unless it is a favorite, which I usually purchase :))
7. I truly believe I was born in the wrong time period.  I did Guys & Dolls in High School, and I fell in love with that time period and decided that I should have lived in the time of hats, finger waves, and guys in suits :) (The cast of “Guys & Dolls” pictured below.  I’m the first of the girls in pink and hey, I was a doll :))
8. I have a big heart, sometimes too big for my own good.  In elementary school, my mom would have to give me 3 times more money than I needed every day because I couldn’t stand for anyone not to be able to afford to go to the talent show or get snack that day.  I have been known to date guys because I felt sorry for them rather than because I loved them. I cry over everything and prefer giving gifts instead of receiving them.  This isn’t always a good thing, because I also tend to be the person that people walk all over because of this.
9. The majority of the time, I wear high heels.  I have bought a few pairs of flats, but I only wear them if it 1.) suits the outfit, or 2.) I am going to be doing a lot of walking and don’t want to wear the tips off my heels.  In fact, I wear them so much that even Alex doesn’t realize how short I am until I am in flats (and it never fails…he always says, “Wow, I didn’t realize you were that short” ;))
10. I am a huge perfectionist and although I’m fairly crafty, I tend to shy away from making stuff and certain projects because it brings so much frustration when I don’t get it right the first time. (I was the kid that would be almost finished with a drawing or assignment in school and would wad it up and throw it away because I wasn’t happy with it!)

My life in a nutshell…or blog post :)

What has been going on in my life lately?

Well, let me tell you!

Tuesday before last marked the beginning of our anniversary week and I proceeded to tell you all you wanted to know (and probably more) about “our story” part I, part II, part III and a little about us.

That same week, I also had the pleasure of subbing for a sweet 5th grade class and got to watch the Tide roll over LSU on Saturday with my two favorite boys!

Last Sunday, Alex and I headed home to celebrate his dad's, a.k.a the Rocket Scientist’s, 51st birthday!  Last Tuesday marked the 5 year anniversary of Alex and I dating *cue awwww ;)*, and I also received my first blogger award from my sweet friend Brittany (the only Tennessee fan I’ll speak to ;)).

On Wednesday, Alex and I got a nice surprise and found out we both got student tickets to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta :)

Alex and I didn’t get to see each other much less celebrate our anniversary on Tuesday, so we went out to dinner on Friday night.  In a moment of pure insanity, I suggested he should be plan the whole thing, and he kept it under wraps the entire week (which was a nice surprise :))

Whew!  I think that’s it…life has been crazy lately, but in a good way! :)

Surprise Anniversary Dinner

As I mentioned here, Alex and I have gone to the Cheesecake Factory every anniversary except the first.  This year, we decided that we wanted to do something different since it was a semi-big anniversary :)

In a moment of insanity, I told Alex that he should plan it and surprise me.  I am the resident planner of the two of us, so not sure what possessed me to say this (maybe because I’ve got way too much on my plate as it is :)), but it was sort of nice not having to do anything but get dressed (although I wasn’t too comfortable with the loss of control :)).

Anyway, he ended up taking me to the Melting Pot, which is a really cool fondue restaurant in Birmingham.  I had mentioned that I would like to go here and as usual, he didn’t listen and thought it was his own idea, but we got to go nonetheless :)

They were doing what they call the “Alpine Big Night Out” which has a pre-fixe menu and you just choose what you’d like.  We did this when we went to Kozy’s on Valentine’s Day this year and it is good for us because we get to try things we normally wouldn’t order (we’re bad about ordering the same things every where we go!) and this was no different!

When Alex called to make the reservations, he told them it was for our Anniversary so they put us in a private booth in the back of the restaurant (we were practically had our own hallway!) and they were super nice!

    First course:  Alp and Dell Cheese Fondue - White wine, garlic, whole grain mustard and nutmeg, with Gruyerre, Raclette, and Fontina cheeses.  We had 2 kinds of bread, apples, sausage, caulflower and pickes for dipping.

This was amazing!  I could have dipped anything in this and it would have been delicious.  It didn’t take us long to finish it!

We really tried to pace ourselves because we knew we had more yummy courses coming up like this one:

Second Course:  Alpine Ridge Salad – Mixed greens topped with Gruyere, Raclette, and Fontina cheeses, hard-boiled eggs and honey roasted almonds with a shallot vinagrette.

This was easily one of the best salads I’ve ever eaten.  Even Alex, who is NOT a salad person, couldn’t get enough!

While waiting on the next course, we snapped our traditional “table” picture.  I hate not being able to sit beside him, but it will do :)

Yes, we matched.  I went out and got my top this past week and picked out the shirt for Alex and gave it to him for his anniversary present from me.  Plus, he needed a new dress shirt :)

Then came the main course.  I will say, it was probably my least favorite course of the entire meal.  Not that it wasn’t yummy (because it definitely was), but since you cook it yourself, it is obviously not going to be the best pieces of meat you’ve ever tasted.  It was fun though!

Third Course – Entree – Garlic Crusted Chicken, NY Strip Steak, Filet Mignon, Shrimp, and Bratwurst with various sauces for dipping

We chose the coq au vin cooking style – fresh herbs, garlic, mushrooms, spices, and burgundy wine

It was quite entertaining because they tell you how long to leave each item in there.  So, Alex and I were both determined not to get sick so we made sure to stick to those times.  We had his watch, my watch, and stopwatch on my phone going just to be safe! :)  We overcooked quite a few of them and we never could get the potatoes to cook correctly, but it was entertaining to say the least.

Then, came my favorite part of the meal:  dessert!

The dessert that was on the pre fixe menu was a white chocolate apple cobbler fondue with spiced apples.  I would have been perfectly happy with that, but the waitress told us we could substitute anything on the dessert menu.  As soon as I opened the menu and I saw this

I love Turtle candies (I’ve loved them since I was a kid and I always got them for Valentine’s day from my parents and Alex has started buying them for me as well) so there were no other options for me when I saw that.  Even better, I didn’t have to say anything before Alex said “Let me guess, you want the turtle thing right?”  I of course nodded, and that’s what we got :)

I’ve decided that this is my idea of heaven, because they bring you this tray of goodies…

I don’t even have the words to describe how yummy it was.  I will say that that dessert should not even be legal…it is seriously that yummy.  We tried all of the dippers and although I had my favorites, I think I could have dipped anything in it and I would have been perfectly happy!

We weren’t able to eat all of the fondue, and I tried to figure out a way to bring it home, but no such luck.  Alex did let me know that he this would be our new B’ham dessert place (sorry Cheesecake Factory…you’ve been replaced!)

Thankfully, Alex got a ticket too so on December 5th, we’ll be in the Georgia Dome watching the Tide play the Gators :)  I’m pumped!

My First Blogger Award!

Thanks to one of my new blogger friends over at Tales of a Southern Belle and her Beau, I have been given my first blogger award!
Thanks girl! :)  The rules are I have to tell you 7 things about myself and give this award to 7 people.  This will be a tough one, but I’m going to do my best! (Note:  Alex told me that these are pretty well known, but I’m posting it anyway :))

1. I am a compulsive color matcher.  It drives my mom crazy because I have multiple shades of every color (particularly red) because I will not wear anything together if it doesn’t match exactly.  I know you’re not supposed to be matchy matchy, but I can’t help it…it is in my blood.  If you mention this in front of my grandmother, she will immediately bring up the time when I was 2 and took off my shorts because they didn’t match her shoes I was playing with at the time.  Yes, I have a problem :)
2. My senior year of high school, I went to a Rockette workshop in Nashville.  Afterwards, our instructor pulled me aside and told me I should think about trying out to be a Rockette.  What she didn’t realize is that I am only 5 foot and the minimum was 5’6. :(
3. Although many people spell their first name like mine, my mom actually made up the spelling.  She like the show Hotel and she thought the receptionist, Megan, was cute.  She liked the name, but to make it different she took my grandmother’s middle name, Mae so it would be pronounced like May-gan instead of Megan.
4. I’m obsessed with all things purple.  Not only is my room and bathroom decorated in purple, but even things like my mop, broom, vacuum, storage bowls, storage boxes, etc. are all purple.  Usually if I see something in purple, I buy it (my mom and Alex also contribute to this addiction)  This addiction started when I was little after I found some of the silk fabric my grandmother used to make my mom’s bridesmaids dresses and began wrapping it around my pacifier.
5. I have a ridiculous memory when it comes to certain things.  Like, I can tell you what I’ve worn on just about every date I’ve been on.  Certain events I can tell you every detail down to what I was wearing, but common every day things I have to write down or I’ll forget. 
6. I’m OCD when it comes to certain things, but not so much with others.  I’m a horrible housekeeper, but only because I don’t want to just clean, I want it organized perfectly. I start cleaning and drag everything out to reorganize… I get overwhelmed and it never gets finished, which means I end up with a bigger mess than when I started.  Like when I redid my closet, instead of just hanging up all of the clothes, I took the rest out and put them all back in, all of the colors together following the color spectrum.  Although it took forever and I made the biggest mess (and couldn’t find my bed for a few weeks), it was worth it because I can find my clothes much easier :) 
7. I love all things paper.  I am a compulsive list maker and have been known to buy cute notepads for every season and have tons of stationary (and tend to pick some up all the time).

Today is mine and Alex’s 5 year anniversary! It is so hard to believe that we’ve been together for 5 years!

My, how we’ve changed! :) 

Although I was planning to write something sweet and eloquent for the occasion, my cold medicine is making it hard to do anything that requires a thought process today! :)  I will say that although we’ve had our ups and downs, it has been a wonderful 5 years!  :)  I’m a lucky girl!  Hopefully we’ll have many more anniversaries to celebrate!

I’ve already gotten quite a few messages asking what we are doing for our anniversary.  Alex’s schedule is extremely busy today (as in he doesn’t get a break until about 2 a.m. tomorrow morning) so we probably won’t get to see much of each other today :(.  He did stop by for a little while late last night and even though I was sniffly and in a drug-induced haze, we did get to spend the first few minutes of our anniversary together. 

As I mentioned in my Anniversary Week post, we usually go to the Cheesecake Factory, but this year we’re changing it up.  Alex has picked a restaurant somewhere in Birmingham (there are so many, I didn’t even try to guess) and we have reservations for Friday at 8:00 pm.  That is all I know, and all he will tell me!  Although I hate not being in control, it is nice just knowing I just have to get ready and not worry about all the logistics.  I know it will be wonderful!

Anyway, I’ve got some more posts coming up (we had a busy weekend!), but I just wanted to send out a happy anniversary to my favorite guy! :)

Getting to Know…Us :)

I saw this cute survey on one of my favorite blogs, Tales of a Southern Belle and her Beau, and I just had to steal it for this week…thanks Brittany for sharing!
So in honor of our Anniversary Week, here’s a little more about Alex and I :)

1. What are your middle names?  Elizabeth, Claude (pretty sure he’s going to hate me for putting this up here…sorry babe!)
2. How long have you been together? Almost 5 years, would be 7 if we had stayed together the first time
3. How long did you know each other before you started dating?  The first time:  We had known each other a few months before we actually started dating, Second time:  2 years…I told you were were complicated ;)
4. Who asked who out? He asked me out.
5. How old are each of you?  We’ll both be 25 in February (I’m actually 12 days older than him…my birthday is Feb 6th, his is Feb 18th)
6. Did you go to the same school?  No, we actually went to rival high schools!
7. Are you from the same home town? Sort of, our houses are in different towns, but only about 15-20 minutes apart.  I claim I’m from his hometown though because it is bigger and more well-known ;)
8. Who is the smartest?  We’re “smart” in different ways.  Alex is awesome at problem-solving and anything to do with math and science, and extremely intelligent, but not very motivated when it comes to school.  I, on the other hand, am very academic and working on a PhD, but I definitely have my “Maegan” moments as Alex calls them, where all common sense goes out the window ;).  So, I would say we’re both pretty smart, but in different ways.
9. Who majored in what?  Both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in elementary education, Alex started out in Chemical Engineering, moved to Mechanical Engineering where he spent most of his undergraduate years, and just recently changed over to Entrepreneurship and Small Company Management.
10. Who is the most sensitive? Me, most definitely.  He knows me so well that anytime something sappy comes on TV, he just hands me a tissue ;)
11. Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?  I guess it would be DeFuniak Springs/Seaside/Destin, Florida.
12. Who has the worst temper?  This is a tough one.  Alex has a more-laid back personality, but when he gets mad, he gets mad.  However, I’m extremely high-strung, and have been known to have a few meltdowns, but mine aren’t quite as severe as Alex’s (probably because I have them more often ;))
13. How many children do you want?  I want two (boy and a girl), but Alex’s thoughts on children changes day by day
14. Who does the cooking?  If you know us at all, you know Alex does most of it.  I am getting better though!
15. Who is more social?  If you’d asked me this question about 4 years ago, I would have said me without hesitation, but as we’ve gotten older (and Alex has put in many hours behind a bar) he has definitely become more social.
16. Who is the neat freak?  Depends, I love organization and I’m extremely OCD when it comes to how things are organized, but I’m so undomestic it’s not funny.  I usually end up making a bigger mess when trying to clean because I want it perfect and organized and ended up getting overwhelmed.  Alex is better at general cleaning and is particular about certain things, but not super organized.
17. Who is the most stubborn?  We’re both pretty stubborn so that’s a tough call!
18. Who wakes up earlier?  Definitely me, I’ve spent the past 5 years being Alex’s human alarm clock :)
19. Where was your first date? First time we went out together:  Movie theatre in the Decatur to see “Austin Powers:  Goldmember”, First official date:  dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s in Decatur (we thought we were so classy ;)) and then the movies to see “Two Weeks Notice”
20. Who has the bigger family?  I have more blood relatives, but Alex has so many “adopted” family members due to his parents being in the Air Force
21. Do you get flowers often?  It has been a while, but when he worked at the bar, I got a rose every night (thanks Rose Lady!) and he buys me flowers every special occasion.
22. How do you spend the holidays?  Since we’re both from the same “hometown”, we get to spend it with both of our families. 
23. Who is more jealous?  Neither one of us really because we’ve never felt like we needed to be.  I’ve always had a lot of guy friends and Alex is one of the few boyfriends that was fine with it.  He worked at a bar for years and had to flirt to get tips, but I was never really jealous because I trusted him.
24. How long did it take to serious?  A while.  The first time we dated…we were just dating, nothing serious.  When we dated in college, it took us a long time to admit we were serious.  We told everyone we were just casually dating and realized, after several months, that we were more serious than we realized.
25. Who eats more?  Definitely Alex…I don’t know where he puts it all!
26. What do you do for a living?  I was a teacher and now I’m subbing and going back to school full-time to pursue my PhD.  Alex is a part time bartender and full time business student…hopefully he’ll be starting a new job in January *fingers crossed*
27. Who does the laundry?  We don’t live together, but I do his laundry sometimes too…so, me.
28. Who's better with the computer?  Probably me, just because my PhD is in Instructional Technology, but he’s better at other gadgets
29. Who drives when you are together?  Always Alex…I don’t dare drive, because he is the WORST backseat driver
30. What is your song?  We don’t have one particular song, but we have a few that we claim:  Cake – Never There (only because he sang it to me at a party when we got back together in college), Frank Sinatra – Come Fly with Me (we LOVE all Rat Pack songs, but this is one of our favorites and we play it at every special dinner), and Incubus – Drive (it’s my ringtone for him).

So, there you have it!  Now, you know a little more about Alex and I ;)

Alex and I had the wonderful opportunity to go home and help celebrate his dad’s 51st birthday with him and his family.  Alex’s mom and I have the same planning personalities so she went all out and planned a space themed for her husband (he is a rocket engineer for NASA and worked on the Ares I-X rocket that launched a few weeks ago).  It was adorable!
